Sony Vaio PCG-FR315B RAM Upgrade Problem!

Hello, everybody! I have a Sony Vaio PCG-FR315B (GB) that comes with 256MB of RAM and I just bought 512MB RAM to upgrade. There's a big problem: the system (and the BIOS) recognize only 256MB or only 512MB; not both in the same time! It supports 1GB of RAM. There's need a BIOS UPDATE (even though, I can't find a new version!)? Or there must be 512 with 512 or 256 with 256? Please help! Thank's in advance! :slight_frown:

Hi vladutucam and welcome.

Does a single module work in BOTH memory slots? I am wondering if one of the slots is damaged because there was a problem with the solder on some older PCG Models.

There is also a known problem with some makes of memory like Corsair.

What are the specifications of the memory you have purchased?

Hi, thank's for reply. Yes, both of slots are working, I was thinking about what you have said along time ago and I put the memory in the both slots. I think the bios recognize the first memory I plug in, even though it is in slot A or B. It isn't a Corsair. I can't find the specifications right now, but I'll say what I know: PC2100 DDR SDRAM SODIMMs . Sorry, I'll be back with new specifications. I know that both memory are the same (despite one being 256 and one 512). Thank's again!

I'm not sure but there could be a big problem because if i type "sony vaio ram upgrade problem" (Google search), you'll find a lot of people that have this kind of problem but I didn't find an answer.

I'm back! I have some details: *The notebook's memory: Samsung PC2100S 256 MB DDR PC2100 CL2.5
*The upgrade memory: SimpleTECH PC-2100 CL2.5 512MX8

I'm waiting for an answer. Thank you!
P.S. : Both slots are working!
The bios version is R0108K7.

I have never heard of Simple TECH. Is it NON-EEC memory? I have no idea if the two memories are compatible.

Hopefully someone else with your model may have an idea.

What is a NON-ECC memory?

ECC (error correction code) RAM is able to detect and correct errors, this type of RAM is usually used on Servers, your Vaio need to have Non ECC RAM, Non ECC modules are usually faster more common and normally cheaper.
