No Battery is detected - VGN-FZ31S

I got my new notebook and battery out of the box on Christmas Day. Since then it has displayed this message intermittently (when running off mains). Yesterday, the machine just died when running on batteries at about 70% charge. Since then it doesn't recognise that it has a battery. Have I simply been sold a defective battery? My machine is running Vista Home Premium.

Try removing and then re-attaching your battery ensuring it's locked into position..

If that doesn't help s simple way to check if this is a battery or possible hardware problem is to take your Vaio to a local stockist and ask if you can try another battery in your Vaio..
