Hard disk check

Hello,

Since yesterday my VAIO reboots spontaneously. I have had more than 10 reboots in 2 hours. I disabled Windows automatic reboots on errors and now it shows a blue screen with the error: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.

This looks like a hardware problem....I have run memtest and it didn't find any RAM errors.

Now I want to run a hard disk check. Does sony have any tool to do this? I have tried with Windows checkdisk from command promtp but it says: Cannot open volume for direct access

Thank you

Hi camilo,

There can be many reasons for this message but possibly the most common is overheating. To eliminate this as a cause please download PC Wizard (free) and let us known the CPU temperature both at startup and just before the BSOD.

It would also help if you let us know your model and operating system.

If overheating proves not to be the cause then please let us know of any recent hardware installed or driver updates.

Overheating is not the problem. I always like to have my laptop cool. Right now my CPU temp is 43ºC and it never reaches 50ºC.

The model is VGN-A195EP and I use XP.

I have run chkdsk from Dos (using NTFS4DOS) and when it reaches 71% of phase2 it stops because of an "unexpected error". This leads me to think that maybe it is a hard drive problem which causes the reboots.
