flash turns off live view

When I fit the flashgun to the hotshoe on my A7 the live view gets turned off so you cannot see the effect of adjustments to exposure prior to taking a image wehn using the flash as a fill flash,

That kind of make useing the flash to fill shadows a bit useless as you can't see the shadows . is there a way to stop this happening other than turning the flash off ?

That's a correct assumption! It indeed turns off live-preview and "simulates" what the final result will look like, exposure-wise that is.

I turn off the flash to meter for the background, set my settings (in M) and then turn on the flash...Bit of a walkaround but it works.

This is an annoyance indeed! Maybe someone else knows a creative solution for this?
