jpeg compression

Hey,

I find the phone compresses the photos too much, hence sacrificing the quality in a desktop. The photos are mind blowing to view in the phone, but when transferred to pc it loses that quality. My 13 MP pictures range only upto 2mb. I had an XPERIA RAY before. With its 8mp camera it gave me about 3mb pictures. It had same quality on phone and pc. What is the issue?

plz reply

simple answer, your phone has something called Bravia Engine, your computer doesn't, that's why the pictures do not look as stunning on a computer as your phone or if you connect your phone to a Bravia TV you should be able to see the same quality.

Wrong - The pictures are over compressed! A "true" RAW image taken at 13mp would be substantially larger and look good anywhere. If the file is "smaller" compression is occurring. Have turned off Bravia and still get Leggo block photos on PC (1920x1080) and don't get the same results from the older S3 taking 8Mb photos at the same size as ZL's 13Mb.

RAW1218,0 MB(uncompressed 12 bits/pixel - Bayer mask)
RAW1015,0 MB(uncompressed 10 bits/pixel - Bayer mask)
RAW812,0 MB(uncompressed 8 bits/pixel - Bayer mask)
BMP36,0 MB(uncompressed RGB 24bit/pixel)
TIFF72,0 MB(uncompressed CMYK 48bit/pixel)
OPENEXR96,0 MB(uncompressed RGBA 4 * 16bit float/pixel)

Any form of compression causes degradation PERIOD. Unless living in a cave you can Google reviews on the Z/ZL camera and read the results.

It's the same as the lens in the S4 and pictures are not as compressed or poor quality as the Z/ZL!

You're colleaugue has even "begged" to see camera SW improved.

greggmancan thanx for the facts, I agree with the camera/pictures compression, but also the bravia engine makes a huge difference, but still compressed.

Re: jpeg compression

All Sony really has to do is give Z/ZL users compression level settings (Along with other camera enhancements). RAW with a camera as capable on Z/ZL "flagship" phone simply deserves it. I can appreciate technology being used to compress images but that applies to mid/low range market devices with limited storage and no external memory.

I hope Sony give a SW update for the camera allowing us to select the degree of compression.A phone with excellent hardware must produce photos that match with the hardware quality.Simply boasting about hardware doesnt do good.
