Any mms changes between C6903 14.1.G.2.257 and 14.2.A.0.290 when mobile data disabled ?

Any mms changes between firmware C6903 14.1.G.2.257 (Android 4.2) and 14.2.A.0.290 (Android 4.3) when mobile data disabled ?

On APN settings like EXAMPLE A,

EXAMPLE A

(Default)
Name: APN DEFAULT
APN: apn.jp
Proxy: (Not set)
Port : (Not set)
Username: username
Password: password
Server: (Not set)
MMSC: (Not set)
MMS proxy: (Not set)
MMS port: (Not set)
MCC: 440
MNC: 55
Authentication Type: CHAP
APN type: default
APN protocol: IPv4
APN roaming protocol: IPv4
Bearer: Unspecified

(MMS)
Name: APN MMS
APN: apn.mms.jp
Proxy: (Not set)
Port : (Not set)
Username: username
Password: password
Server: (Not set)
MMSC: http://mms/
MMS proxy: mms.proxy.ne.jp
MMS port: 8080
MCC: 440
MNC: 55
Authentication Type: CHAP
APN type: mms
APN protocol: IPv4
APN roaming protocol: IPv4
Bearer: Unspecified

it was able to send/recieve MMS messanges even when mobile data is disabled before 14.1.G.2.257 (Android 4.2).
But it seems to be unable to send/recieve any MMS messaages on this APN settings after 14.2.A.0.290 (Android 4.3), when mobile data is disabled.

It is also strange that MMS can be sent/recieved when Wi-Fi is enabled and mobile data is disabled on EXAMPLE A apn settings on 14.2.A.0.290 or later.

What kind of change happened between Android 4.2 and 4.3?

I don't want to hear the simple and silly answer like "MMS cannot be sent/received when mobile data is off".It is natural, normal and obvous on one common APN setting covering both "default" and "mms". I understand that such answer become true when APN setting is like EXAMPLE B. What I want to know is why and how such change happened with technical background.

EXAMPLE B

(Common to both Default and MMS)
Name: APN DEFAULT AND MMS
APN: apn.jp
Proxy: (Not set)
Port : (Not set)
Username: username
Password: password
Server: (Not set)
MMSC: http://mms/
MMS proxy: mms.proxy.ne.jp
MMS port: 8080
MCC: 440
MNC: 55
Authentication Type: CHAP
APN type: default, mms
APN protocol: IPv4
APN roaming protocol: IPv4
Bearer: Unspecified

I would like to hear as many answers as possible. Thank you for your answer in advance.

Thank you for you answer. but you are wrong on Firmware 14.1.G.2.257 or earilier, as actually I was able to send/recieve, on Japan's SoftBank Mobile, any MMS messages when mobile data is disabled on the following APN settings (CASE A).

(CASE A)
(APN for Default)
Name: SoftBank
APN: smile.world
Proxy: (Not set)
Port : (Not set)
Username: dna1trop
Password: (confidential here)
Server: (Not set)
MMSC: (Not set)
MMS proxy: (Not set)
MMS port: (Not set)
MCC: 440
MNC: 20
Authentication Type: CHAP
APN type: default
APN protocol: IPv4
APN roaming protocol: IPv4
Bearer: Unspecified

(APN for MMS)
Name: SoftBank MMS
APN: smile.world
Proxy: (Not set)
Port : (Not set)
Username: dna1trop
Password: (confidential here)
Server: (Not set)
MMSC: http://mms/
MMS proxy: smilemms.softbank.ne.jp
MMS port: 8080
MCC: 440
MNC: 20
Authentication Type: CHAP
APN type: mms
APN protocol: IPv4
APN roaming protocol: IPv4
Bearer: Unspecified

When APN setting is like this (CASE B) , you answer is right perfectly.

(CASE B)

(APN for both Default and MMS)
Name: SoftBank
APN: smile.world
Proxy: (Not set)
Port : (Not set)
Username: dna1trop
Password: (confidential here)
Server: (Not set)
MMSC: http://mms/
MMS proxy: smilemms.softbank.ne.jp
MMS port: 8080
MCC: 440
MNC: 20
Authentication Type: CHAP
APN type: default, mms
APN protocol: IPv4
APN roaming protocol: IPv4
Bearer: Unspecified

>> "That doesn't seem right you will need your data to be on to be able to send and receive MMS, there's no other way around it "

The difference between (CASE A) and (CASE B) is "APN type".It was able to send/recieve MMS messages without mobile data on  until 14.1.G.2.257 when APN type is only "mms". Otherwise there is no meaning that "APN for mms" is differnt from "APN for default".

When APN type is only "mms" (CASE A), we cannot enable/disable "APN for MMS" itself and it must be alive (there is no "on/off" toggle with APN for MMS only) during other mobile data except mms disabled. althought  we can enable/disable "APN for default", it must be nothing  to do with "APN for MMS" in this case.

If we cannot send/recieve any mms without mobile data (any background transactions which has nothing to do with mms) enabled, for what purpose do we need to specify APN type as "default" or "mms"?

This is why I said "I don't want to hear the simple and silly answer like "MMS cannot be sent/received when mobile data is off"", as actually  I was able to send/receive any MMS messages on Japan's SoftBank Mobile with the firmware 14.1.G.2.257 or earilier. Can you still say "it does not seem right"?,  What do you think of it?

I tested this here on 14.2.A.0.290 and i can send/receive MMS with both WiFi and data disabled. It also works in both case A and B for me.

If this doesn't work in your phone i suspect it has do to with local and operator customization. I would recommend that you check with your local support if it's supposed to work this way in your market: http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/support/contact-us/

Thank you for your quick reply, indeed. It is interesting, Which service provider or operator did you use for the test?

At leatst, we can say it does not seem to have problem between 14.1.G.2.257 and 14.2.A.0.290, as Rickard case worked
fine.

I have also heard that MMS messages cannot be sent/received without mobile data enabled in the case of Samsung Galaxy Series. Unlike Samsung products, I believe that Sony Xperia is not with such stupid and silly specification.

Rickard, although I really prefer to contact SoftBank Mobile for technical support, APN settings are confidential in Japan, unlike European mobile operators such as Vodafone, O2, T-mobile and Orange. Many foreigners use their own SIM Free handsets on SoftBank mobile after knowing this confidential APN infomations. Thus I cannot ask any help from SoftBank.

Anyway, I really appriciate you, Rickard, for your testing under the same situation, and for quick reply.

I would also like to know any other succcessful case, like Rickard did.

Let me know the follwing information

How is your case?

what I want to know is:

Your Country.

Which provider / operator?

APN settings for both default and mms

Succeeded or Failed?

Thank you for your co-operation, in advance.

I tested this with the swedish operator Tele2 and with a phone customized for the swedish market.

We use different softwares in our phones depending on where the phone is sold (country and operator). This may perhaps be a requirement for your market. I would recommend that you contact your local Sony Xperia support to see if they have any information on this. I believe you'll find contact information on this page: http://www.sonymobile.co.jp/support/customercenter/semcj.html

Thanks for your message, Rickard

The problem happened not with preinstalled /system/app/Conversations.apk, but with other Third-party messaging applications. they worked fine with 14.1.G.2.257 or earlier.

After 14.2.A.0.290 or later, the problem happens that MMS cannot be sent/recieved.

What I feel strange is that MMS can be sent/recieved even when Wi-Fi is enabled and mobile data toggle is off.

MMS cannnot be sent/recieved with third party MMS client only when both Wi-FI and mobile data tooggle switch are off at the same time.

As you mentioned, my operator may be different from your swedish operator Tele2.

Unfortunately  http://www.sonymobile.co.jp/support/customercenter/semcj.html mentions not C6903 (SIM-unlocked) but SO-01F (for NTT docomo) and SOL23 (for KDDI). although I appriciate you for providing information. C6903 is not sold offcially in Japan.

I strongly wish this problem will be solved with coming 14.2.A.1.142 or with Android 4.4 KitKat firmwares in the future,

I will use my C6903 handset with 14.1.G.2.257 until this problem is solved and it comes to work fine again in future update.

Anyway thank you for your assistance, indeed.
