QSI CDRW/DVD SBW 242C driver corrupt

Hi All,
This is sending me potty. I accidentally clicked on the .exe to re-install all my drivers on a VGN-B1VP. Now most of my blue function keys don't work (I can live with that for now) but the major pain is that the CD RW/DVD now does not work and uninstalling it/reinstalling it does not remove the error of "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)". It's a QSI CDRW/DVD SRW242C.

I've google'd and although there are many people suffering the same issue, there is no fix listed and there seem to be no drivers for this device to be downloaded (My understanding is that most optical drives just use standard drivers).
I've checked the Sony site and the drivers for this model have no driver for the optical drive...
Maybe the answer is in one of the thread histories on clubvaio already but I can't see it (and I can't see a search button.)
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Hi mwidlake and welcome.

This seems a popular problem today!

To fix the DVD drive follow the solution given in this post earlier this evening.

Ooooops - forgot the Fn Keys.

If you have a directory C:\Utils, just double-click on the .EXE file inside the folder.

If you don't have C:\Utils, download the Original Utilities Package from here: -

http://support.vaio.sony.co.uk/downloads/preinstalled/preinstalled.asp?site=voe_en_GB_cons&c=0&s=VGN...

Right-click on the downloaded file and choose "Extract All". Choose to extract the files to C:\.

Go to C:\Utils and run the W-GA-000002-19.EXE file.

Many thanks Blencogo - I'm afraid I had already tried this one. I saw your posting about a similar problem and tried deleteing both setting and restarting. Well, I tried deleting the lowerfilters first and restarting before deleting the higherfilters entry and restarting. A little issue with mild dyslexia makes picking things out of lists tricky!

Current setting in that location are:-
(default) DVD/CD-ROM drivers
class CDROM
enumpropages32 MmSys.Cpl,MediaPropPageProvider
icon -51
Installer32 storprop.dll,Dvdclassinstaller
noinstallClass 1
SilentInstall 1
TroubleShooter-0 hcp://help/tshoot/tsdrive.htm

so no lowerfilters or higherfilters.

Any other suggestions?

Oh, and forgot to say, re-running the W-GA-000002-19.EXE utilities instal script worked, fixing the function keys. It takes a good while to run (so if someone else comes across this thread and tries it, you know it takes a few minutes pre and post reboot). It's ironic, but it was running this exe by accident that started the trouble, though I did try and kill the reinstal when I first accidentally executed it.

It seems my wayward Vaio has stumped not only me but everyone else too. Has anyone got any other suggestions how I could get my CD/DVD drive to spring into life? I've deleted all CD-based software off the laptop, reverted windows media player back a version, taken the physical piece of kit out and cleaned the contacts, sworn at the machine, hit it, tried to punt the cat but she hid.... :slight_frown:

Not quite sure what else to suggest .............

Does it still show a Code 39 error in Device Manager?

In Device Manager, double-click on your drive and click on the Driver tab. Then click on Driver Details. What is shown in the list of installed drivers? You should have cdrom.sys, imapi.sys, redbook.sys and storprop.dll. If any are missing, check that you have them available to install in C:\Windows\system32\drivers and the .dll in C:\Windows\system32.

Will it boot from the DVD Drive? If the problem is drivers it should still boot from a bootable disc. If it doesn't it will start to look like hardware.

Thanks again Blencogo.

All drivers are there but I'll secure copies from another machine, just in case they have become corrupted in some way. I've got windows CDs, I'll see if I can boot off any of them. If that fails I guess it could be a case of trying to get hold of an external cd drive.

*sigh*. It's the hardware. I copied over the drivers to no avail, then tried to boot via the CD and the drive went crazy. Tried windows2000 and even a win95 installation CD. Sounded like it was trying to force the read head out of the case!
Thanks for trying chaps.
