Problem with dvd-cd rom driver on VGN-SZ4MN/B

Need help with DVD - CD rom driver. ( Matshita DVD-Ram UJ-842S ATA device)

New to forum and not happy bunny. Have vowed never to buy Sony Vaio again. 14 months after purchasing VGN SZ4MN, screen cracked whilst laptop was on, but not being used. Prior to screen cracking I noted the machine became very hot. Sony refused to accept that screen had not been physically damaged. Told to pay £647 for repair or have machine returned as is. Had no option but to pay, given I had paid £1600 for it. Very peeved, as also took out the additional 2 year warranty....anyhow onto my problem, which hopefully can be resolved by somone out there and can continue using laptop until able afford replacment ( not Sony).....enough ranting ....

have been unable get DVD/CD's etc loaded and and checked Device Manager to find yellow triangle with exclamation mark with text 'Windows cannot intialise the device driver for this hardware Code 37' I have followed various instructions on websites including unistalling the driver and then trying to re-install, but box now appears which reads ' Device Driver Software was not successfully installed, please consult your device manufacturer for assistance in getting this device installed.'

I have gone onto Club Vaio site and tried to download origianl drivers and also updates for Matshita UJ-842S ATA device, but doesnt work either.

Can anyone guide ??

Thanks

Hi stevestan and welcome.

The drivers are part of the Windows OS. Your Upper and Lowerfilters are probably blocking the installation.

Give this a try - I'm not sure it is designed for your error code but it stands a good chance of working.

Create a Restore Point in System Restore (just in case!!)

You need to edit your Registry - follow the instructions carefully: -

1.Click Start -> Run and type: REGEDIT , and hit enter. For Vista, type REGEDIT into the search box and open it).
2. Navigate to –

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

click on this and locate UpperFilters in the right-hand window, (if it exists) right click on this and select Delete and then OK.
3. Under the same Registry Key locate LowerFilters, (if it exists) right click on this and select Delete and then OK.
4. Quit Registry Editor and re-boot the computer, new registry values will be created that will hopefully cure the problem.

After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, you may possibly need to re-install your burning software if it doesn't work – but not usually.

Good Luck.

Hi Blencogo

Many many thanks for your suggestion tomy problem with DVD/CD rom drive....and after plucking up courage I made the suggested changes ( deleted upper / lower filters )and hey presto it worked. Again many thanks, as had struggled in trying to resolve this problem for at least 2 weeks prior.
