Newbie needs help on recording

Hi,
I have a vaio VGN-FW11M.
I am running a cakewalk music editing programme and when I try to record anything I have edited it records through the mic. I need it to record internally, as it is picking up all background noises etc. My old soundcard had a 'what u hear' setting - I can find nothing like this on the vaio.
Hope this makes sense.
Any help would be appreciated.

Bad news I'm afraid.

For some misguided reason Sony have disabled 'Stereo Mix' in all Vaios running Vista. They probably consider it an anti-piracy measure.

This used to be possible with XP.

The only way is via the Mic socket.

If I had known that the other week I would have bought an Acer instead of a hobbled VAIO
