Cardreader issue

I recently took a load of photos in my cam and they got saved on a SD card but when I inserted it into the card reader it says "you need to format the disk in drive E: before you can use it"

Why is it asking that and how can I prevent it next time?

this is a Vista bug and as far as I am aware there isn't a fix but you should still be able to access your files..
