I've just purchased my first Android based mobile and would like some advice on what apps you consider "essential" for the first time user. I'm referring to the whole spectrum of apps, including games, widgets, serious apps etc.
Please consider, that until recently I had a Nokia 3210, which I adored for over 10 years, so I consider myself a complete ludite when it comes to technology.
So as the thread title says, what's hot?

OK I'll give you a few of my favorites...
Free from Market
SMS - Handcent
Email - K-9
Contacts - Gesture Search (use your finger to draw in letters of your contact)
Games - Angry Birds - addictive silly fun
File Manager - any or all - Astro / Linda / ES File Manager (essential for accessing your SD card)
Calendar - Jorte
ADW.Launcher - different home launcher which I love
Paid
Beautiful Widgets - Clock and weather widget
Vignette - Camera app with great filters etc and use of the photo light as a 'flash' of sorts
Also Appbrain - register online then get the app for your phone and sync. It keeps a copy of your app list should you ever need to do a factory reset or another big update comes out.
Have a look over at Android Forums - Show Us Your Homescreen and you will get an idea of what people are using on their phones. The range is vast!

Most of all, if its free... download it, give it a go and if you don't like it just uninstall it. That's the beauty of Android!
Before I start, let me apologize in advance.
Actually, what's hot to one might not be hot to another. In fact alot of information is out there in the internet, all you need to do is spend some time to get it.
A hint for you, you might want to check out the Market too.
Enjoy :smileywink:.
