Web browser works on 3G, but apps only work over WiFi.

Hi,

Got a brand new phone yesterday. Upgraded it to Android 2.1 before using it. In general, phone is functioning properly, however none of the applications (i.e. YouTube, Gmail, Maps) will work over the 3G connection, but the Web Browser does function ok. The apps will work over WiFi (which isn't much use if you're trying to use maps or gmail on the go). I have tried restarting phone (battery out restart). It is not a signal strength issue, I am getting HSPA with full bars and it still times out with "no connection detected" (or variations thereof, depending on the actual application). I can work around this using the web browser based clients for these apps, but as they aren't streamlined they are a PITA to use.

Any help would be apprecaited.

Try using a sim from another network provider.

Just taking a punt here, but have you checked whether the Internet settings for these apps is set to Default?

There doesn't appear to be anywhere to set this within the application(s). I had a look at home -> settings -> applications. 'manage applications' doesn't give me an option to make settings changes either (and it doesn't show any of the default apps, only any 3rd party ones I've loaded) - Is there somewhere else I should be checking?

Edit: Further to this, I've been triple checking all the steps and available options. I can confirm the browser works as expected, so if I have only wifi enabled it will use that, if i have only 3G connected it will use that. Gmail works over wifi only. YouTube and Maps now don't appear to work over either - is there somewhere in the application that I can set the connection method?

It looks like it's just some of the standard apps. The Wisepilot application works ok over either connection type also. So somewhere/somehow YouTube/Email/Gmail/Maps/Latitude/Market either can't or won't switch from WiFi to 3G. That's a bit useless as if I'm at one of my regular WiFi spots i'm at work or home, meaning I have a PC or laptop to use anyway - the whole idea is to be able to use these apps while on the move.

I tried resetting back to default and starting again - no change unfortunately. So functionally I generally have a working phone, but have enough bugs to leave me a bit peeved with it.

Hi,

Thankyou Er.Kannan, I have tried another network's SIM on your suggestion and all items functioned correctly using that SIM. Your answer has been marked as the solution. I will go to my current provider and find out what is wrong with my SIM card.

Happy to hear that you solved the problem. Please post the actual problem with your sim when you find it out.

The SIM was just an old type of SIM (from about 2003/2004). The staff member that replaced my SIM at the store wasn't very technical, so I can't give any specifics as to whether it's a RAM problem, native vs java, etc.
