Hello,
On the support page for w995, it says to download wayfinder maploader, which basically allows offline maps. What i want to know is that, does the phone need internet connection even if it is pre-loaded maps?
thanks

Well, you still get 3 months of Wayfinder free and also Google maps, if you don't mind written rather than voice directions.
Yes it would as the aGPS requires the ability to triangulate via Cell Towers and as such would need the internet enable to assist in this function.
Main menu--Location services--Settings--Assisted start--(select)-Never: This will disable A-GPS, but you can still use GPS to fix your position, although it will take longer.
i just found out that wayfinder is a trial version. couldn't the w995 atleast get a full free version. gps is just a wasted feature.
i would rather use ovi maps on my 5230. the thing is that gps takes ages for connection then messes up directions, so i'd rather get old fashioned map.
Fair enough.
If wayfinder doesn't work for you, you could give GpsMid ( http://gpsmid.sourceforge.net ) a try.
It is also an offline map application, including voice based turn-by-turn instructions for car, pedestrian and bicyce routing and it is completely free.
It's map data comes from OpenStreetMap ( http://www.openstreetmap.org )
