PRS-505 Hangs when Downloading books

When I downlood books from Adobe Digital Editions to the Sony Reader PRS-505 the reader hangs and says not to disconect.

However, when I disconnect the reader, the book has in fact downloaded successfully to the reader.

Is there a way to prevent this happening as it is difficult to know when the book has been downloaded

and I am worried I may disconnect when it is in the middle and cause problems

Hi, I have exactly the same issue - I think Sony has a fault that it is not correcting.  I now just disconnect anyway - so far nothing bad has happened.  Finally, I keep nearly all my books on my sd card in the hope that if anything goes wrong, then I will still have my books.

Hi allanahm61,

I don't think you have a problem, the 'Do not disconnect' message is quite normal all the while you have your Reader connected to your computer, and is not an indication of whether a task (in this case transferring a book) has been completed or not.  In other words it is not hanging.

Can I suggest the following to help you?

Firstly, transferring a book takes only a second or so as the file sizes are usually not all that big in relative terms.  In the Reader Library software, down the menu on the left hand side there is an icon for 'Status'.  If you watch this icon when you download a book, it revolves to show you that something is happening - when it stops, the transfer is complete (but blink and you can miss it!)  If you do miss it, and you're not sure if you have transferred successfully, click on the 'Status' icon and your main screen will show a list of tasks that the Reader Library has carried out in your current session - this will confirm for you if the transfer you have just done has happened.

To disconnect the Reader safely afterwards you have two options.

1) To the right of the Reader icon in the left hand menu of Reader Library is an eject button (it's quite small - it looks like an underlined upward pointing triangle).  Click on this once, and you should see the message on the Reader itself change from 'Do not disconnect' to 'USB connected'.  At this point you can unplug.

2) Or, simply close Reader Library on your computer, and this also has the effect of changing the message as above so you can unplug.

All that said, as long as the Reader isn't in the middle of doing something, you can't do much harm by unplugging even when it says don't disconnect, but to be completely safe, if you follow the above suggestions I hope all will be well!

Hope this all helps - sorry for the lengthy explanation.
