I bought my first new TV for 10 years to upgrade to smart tv. Generally very pleased with it, but I am unable to find any information on how to set it up to get Britbox. The Britbox website says "soon on Youview" but surely I should be able to download the app. Any guidance would be gratefully received!

‘Britbox on YouView‘ refers to on the boxes, and doesn’t apply to these Sony TVs with YouView.
This doesn’t mean these sets won’t get Britbox, but it won’t be on the YouView timescale, and it will arrive as a separate app on the Google Android TV store, if and when it does,
It might well be worth asking Britbox themselves what their plans are for these TVs.

It appears you have to have Amazon prime and then obtain a fires tick or
r Google chrome cast in order to receive the service
I think it is a con

Your research is patchy 😢
There is no con.
Try this:-
https://help.britbox.com/hc/en-us/articles/360043212953-Where-can-I-watch-BritBox-
You can certainly use a Firestick, but there is no requirement for Amazon Prime.
And you can use any other of the plethora of ways of getting it offered there.
And you can have a free trial, though to continue you do need to subscribe.
But to Britbox, not to Amazon Prime.

Jan 2021 still no answer. Won’t be getting another Sony tv if they restrict access to programmes.
