Hi there

I would always recommend using anti virus on anything connected to the Internet.

Hi there
Normally I would agree with you. Firstly I dont think there is an anti-virus/malware app for Android TV. Secondly, you would have to specifically install a rouge APK or browse dodgy websites via the TV that is capably of delivering a virus payload specific to the Android TV operating system.
If a virus/malware is man-in-the-middle attack happens on the Android TV, its probably because your home network has been broken into / hacked. Many routers these days come with Network protection and Anti-virus/malware protection. Such as mine (Asus DSL-AC68U):
Added to that, some (many?) ISP's these days include network filtering and anti-virus protection from ISP level as well - suggest enabling these as well.
Last bit of advice - ensure that your Wifi password is set and 'strong'
Cheers
