Hot Shoe on Sony DSLR - I just do not like it

I must use any platform to show my utter dislike for the flimsy dangerous way of placing flash units on Sony hotshoe

Dear Sony Customer Support,

I am writing to formally report an ongoing and costly issue with the Sony Alpha A7 series hot shoe design, which has  affected my professional photography work multiple times over the past six years. I have experienced three separate incidents in which external flashes have detached from the camera body due to the unreliable hot shoe locking mechanism.

In two of these cases, flashes from trusted brands Godox and Phottix (Sony-compatible mounts) were in use and became dislodged during regular operation. The mechanical grip of the Multi Interface Shoe proved insufficient to securely hold the accessories, leading to physical damage of both flash units. These failures occurred despite proper mounting and cautious use.

This issue appears to be rooted in the design of the hot shoe mount itself, as countless other professionals across online forums have voiced similar complaints:

  • Inadequate mechanical lock;

  • Loose or wobbly fit;

  • Disruption of TTL signal due to instability;

  • Lack of third-party accessory support security;

  • Cumulative wear of the rail contact system.

As a long-term Sony Alpha user, I request the following actions:

  1. Replacement or repair support for the damaged Godox and Phottix flashes that became detached due to the flawed hot shoe mechanism.

  2. A formal review of the Multi Interface Shoe design and a public acknowledgment of its limitations.

  3. Consideration of a professional-level accessory locking bracket or reinforced hot shoe solution as an optional retrofit or accessory.

  4. Reimbursement or extended service consideration for users who have experienced similar repeat issues.

I have documented these incidents and am happy to provide photos of the affected gear. I urge Sony to take this feedback seriously, as this issue continues to compromise professional confidence in an otherwise excellent system.

I look forward to your response and a constructive resolution.

Hi @Movinstills

  I have several godox accessories (flashes and commanders).

I can confirm that the screw lock mechanism is absolutely bad, and the plastic shoe is inadequate. Actually never dropped any accessories, gust replaced a couple of shoe on my flesh and commender (easy to find on internet as spare parts).

The fact that newer godox accessories have a metal plate and a new “click” lock solution is the sign that they know..

You can try to request for a refund to godox, but I don’t think they approve that.

I can’t imagine why sony should do that for godox.. really strange request I think.
