Xperia ZL C65506 on AT&T: No LTE

I just switched to AT&T. Even though they advertise "Bring your phone" and get LTE if you have bands IV or XVII, I have nothing other than HSPA and HSPA+.

I have tried all the APN combinations, restored stock ROM, wiped the phone, and just replace the SIM. My data plan is provisioned properly.

I've seen some kludgy solutions such as add a phantom phone as a second, backup phone, that is AT&T branded and it will open LTE. Is there a better way? Any C6506 users have success on AT&T?

Apparently, if you are a new customer, you need an AT&T IMEI number on your account. The local store changed my IMEI to one of their store phones, with a munged last number. I immediately got LTE service. Hey, AT&T, if you are going to attract unlocked phone customers, you need to fix your network recognition backend. Otherwise, not many people will spend a solid week to debug.
