Files saving as folders.

I am having a strange problem since my last update.

If I download a file it works OK on the phone and shows up correctly on the phone, but when I plug my phone into a pc via the USB cable, and set it to transfer files on the phone's menu, the files show as a folder. At first I thought it was a problem with the pc,  but I have now tried it on 5 different machines running Xp, Vista, Windows 7,  Windows 10 and Server 2012. It shows the file as a folder in all of them and will open as an empty folder. 

Any ideas?

I don't know if Windows XP can make a screenshot..

XP doesn't use MTP like MTP in Windows Vista and above... it uses USB Mass Storage... the MTP drivers are needed and doesn't come with the OS.

Try formatting a Micro SD in NTFS or FAT32 on the PC, then try to use it on the device, then transfer your files to the SD, and see if the files transferred correctly via USB and by USB card reader on PC.

So should I download purposely MTP driver to my computer ?

My computer with Windows XP Service Park 3 shows only empty folders rather than files which I have created on smartphone Sony XPeria Z Ultra when I connect the smartphone to the computer. Hense the latter can copy them to hard or any other disk only as the empty folders. It looks pretty ridiculous when file like MKV around 5 Gb in phone turns out to be nothing. Here below some screenshots are  as you asked:

And next two screenshots illustrate the disappearance of the file in MKV format:
