I am going to give my XA to my granddaughter. What do I need to do to
1. ensure the warranty continues for her
2. register the phone in her name (or does she have to do that?)
3. Will she be able to simply register the phone in her own name or will I need to remove it from my account first?

I am located in the Nordics so what I'm about to write is specific for our market here, but it may also apply to your local market.
Basically, as long as you have a valid proof of purchase (receipt) or warranty form, then you have valid warranty. You can register the same device on to multiple Sony Mobile accounts without worrying, it does not affect warranty in any way in the Nordic market. You do not have to have the device registered in order to have your device treated within warranty. It is wise to have a look at the warranty terms for your market as well, you may find it here:

However, I strongly recommend getting in touch with your Local support in order to confirm what I just wrote as I am only familiar with my own local market here in the Nordics, it may differ for yours.

Thanks for the reply. I am in Australia so our consumer laws are also fairly strong. I will advise her just to open her own Sony account and register the phone. I sent her the purchase receipt (she lives 1200km away) with the phone so that should meet any warranty needs should they arise. The phone came with an additional 12 months warranty (total 2 yrs) so I assume that would also apply. Thanks again for the response.
