Sony Vaio VGN-C1Z/B Memory upgrade

Hi all,

1) I would like to upgrade my VGN-C1Z/B to 4Gb of memory (2x 2GB) but several sites say that the limit is 2GB. Is this true?

2) Can I use PC667 memory in this laptop (the laptop comes with PC533) underclocked? (I know it won't run at PC667, but will it work?). I'm shopping around for: "Kingston - 2Gb PC667 DDR2 CL5"

3) If I use 2 of these modules, do I get 4Gb or is there any hardware limitation to 2Gb?

4) There isn't any 2GB PC533 RAM modules available ?

Hi alfatek,

welcome to Club VAIO..

Yes Sony state that the maximum RAM that can be supported on your C1Z is 2x1GB, therefore I would recommend you only purchase another 1GB module if you want to upgrade..

A large number of Club Vaio members have bought extra RAM from crucial.com another benefit from buying from Crucial is their memory compatibility guarantee. To visit Crucial.com use this link: Crucial.com

If you need a guide on how to upgrade the RAM on your Vaio, then click the following link: How do upgrade my Vaio's memory ?

I understand that is the recommend setting but I'm wondering if that information is just there because at that time the maximum memoy available was 2GB (2x1GB)... Now we have 2GB DDR2 533Mhz so I'm wondering if it isn't possible to use it.

According to the specs this laptop has this chipset:
Chipset Mobile Intel® 945PM Express Chipset

http://www.intel.com/products/notebook/chipsets/945pm/945pm-overview.htm

So it should support DDR 667Mhz and 4GB of memory (2x2GB). Or can Sony limit the maximum memory capability? (locking features that the chipset can handle)

So my questions are still open:
1) Can I use DDR 2 667MHz
2) Can I install 2x2GB of 667 or 533Mhz DDR2 memory

Crucial.com, as with Sony, state that the C1 series can support DDR2 PC2-4200 or DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.

They also state not to exceed manufacturer supported memory.

Yes, Sony, crucial and kingston websites state that but the chipset this laptop uses can support 667Mhz memory and 4Gb so I'm still not convinced about the 2Gb limit...

Anyone tried using 667Mhz memory and/or 4gb in this laptop or c1s ?

If you want to take the risk and try adding the RAM, then that's your choice..

the chipset is one thing, the memory banking is another, it really depends on what pins/s your laptop is using for it's memory banking, so if it says 2gb limit, 2gb limits it is, there nothing you can do apart from redisigning your motherboard i'm afraid.
