this despite upping the RAM to 1GB

is there any software i can download to make sure everything is running ok?

Make sure that your notebook is free from spyware etc. Try running Spybot S&D and Adaware

The Microsoft Antispyware Beta is also surprisingly good. I would also run an immunisation tool such as SpywareBlaster

After all that, try tune-up utilities 2006 it's recommended by lots of people here (Including Elvis)

Also make sure that your AntiVirus program is up to date.
