Hi i'm new to this forum and i've only had my sony Vaio nr21/j for barely 2 months. i've never had any problems burning dvd's but it just simply will not write on any cd-r i've been through 2 packs of CD-R'S to no avail. any suggestions as to how to sort this out would be much appreciated. i've been to the deepest darkest corners of cyber space trying to find solutions but no luck..
im at my wits end
Hi ferddy07 and welcome to Club Vaio.
Unfortunately your problem is not uncommon but is very difficult to find a cure when it works for either DVD or CD but not the other.
First thing to try is to clean the laser lenses with a liquid lens cleaner. While you have the drive open, gently slide the laser head o the extremes of its travel and make sure it does not jam anywhere.
Does it read CDs OK?
If not try to borrow a bootable CD from someone - an old Windows CD would be the best but you can make one on another PC - and see if it boots in your drive. If it will not boot, then the drive is faulty and will need replacement.
If it reads CDs OK then the problem is more likely to be software based. Have you installed the Optical Disc Drive 4.4.51.500 driver update and the SuperMulti Drive AD-7560A DS03 firmware update? (Check you have the AD-756A fitted first). You can find them here: -

If those do not work then you may have to back up your data and try a full System Recovery back to factory defaults.
If that does not work then a replacement drive will be needed and Sony should do this under your Guarantee. Contct them here: -

Good Luck. I hope you sort it but a high percentage of drives with this problem will need replacing.

Also it may sound silly but what brand are you using?
I tried the Tesco Happy Value brand once and couldn't do a thing with them.
