4G Ultra SD card Reader

I am having problems reading a SANDISK ULTRA II 4GB SD card in my VAIO VGN-FE31Z (Windows XP) or my son's VAIO VGN-FE31S (Windows XP Media Edition). however the card reads no problem in my daughters VAIO VGN-CR42 (Windows Vista).

I've tried updating drivers from the VAIO UPDATE site with no success.

The "SAFELY REMOVE HARDWARE" utility recognises the little brute as a

- "USB Mass Storage Device at Location 0"
- "Sony UBS HS-CARD USB Device"
- GEneric Volume (I:)

... which is similar to my 512K, 1G, & 2G SD cards. However, whilst the drive appears in Windows Explorer, if you click on it the mouse just turns into an hour-glass, explorer freezes until you forcibly eject the card (yes without stopping it).

I've tried getting Windows to update the driver but it finds nothing better than the ones loaded. Anyone any ideas?

I have the same machine and have come across the same issue. I think that the adaptor is incompatible with SDHC memory cards. My smaller, non HC, cards work fine.
