You can just sign out of Talk on your phone and you won't get the notifications, in the Talk app press Menu>More and then select sign out.

you do need a Gmail account to use the Android Market, so you could create an alternative gmail for that.

Settings

               Accounts & Sync

you will see your gmail at the bottom, tap on it

                                                                                                                   Remove account

go to

settings

                    applications

                                        Running services

tap on GTalkService and Stop it

ok, you have Android 1.6 correct?

Because with 2.1 you get this

Settings

               Applications

                                   Unknown sources

                                  Manage Applications

                                   Running services

                                   Development

use Update Service to see if you can get the update to 2.1
make sure you install the newer Back Up & Restore app
if not you can install 2.1 manually through this including Dual Touch
