Two-days old phone (Xperia M4 Aqua 16 GB, my first Sony), charged successfully yesterday afternoon, but since last night plugging in the charger initiates shutdown.
The red light signal flickers for a couple of seconds, as if the battery is empty, and it's "proper shutdown" (with "shutting down" text etc.), and not just immediate power off.
Battery is around 50-60 % full. Nothing has changed, to my knowledge, between the successfull charging and the failure now; no updates (runs Android 5.0 and doesn't show any missing updates), and nothing physical.
Same result if I connect it to computer. The USB cable itself doesn't do anything, however; only when there's charge moving.
Tried with 0,1,2 SIMs, and with and without memory card; no difference.
Since the problem persists also when I try to connect it to my computer, I can't do any of the computer-based things (firmware updates etc.) that were recommended for other powering-down problems, and since I just managed to install and configure everything, I'm not happy to hard-reset and install everything again. And if I do have to install everything again, I'm strongly inclined to return this one to the shop and get another brand 😕 So what should I do?

In this case I can only really advise that you speak with Sony Mobile Customer Care, as this sounds more like a hardware issue.

Hi JT5,
Welcome to the community,
Just to clarify, have you used an alternative USB cable, as a USB cable may work with one device but not another.
Hi Jake and thanks for the quick reply.
I have tried four USB cables (and three different chargers). Including the same cables and chargers I successfully used earlier, for charging with charger as well as for connecting with my computer.
Update: battery is not charging even when power is off, and factory reset doesn't help.
In order to remove my personal data before the battery runs out, in case I need to return the phone to the store, I chose to reset to factory settings. After the reset I tried recharging once more, just in case the problem is related to software, but the result is the same: shutdown.
