Unable to control the volume of optical audio out

I have Sony Bravia KD-55XH9096 with firmware v6.1288. I have connected my audio system to it via optical cable. I can't control the volume with my TV remote and I don't have a remote for my audio system. Please tell me what should I do?

It is technically impossible to change the volume via an optical connection being a digital signal and not having an additional protocol to command the external device (i.e. the CEC over HDMI)
