sony alpha 200 with hvl-f36am flash

my hvl-f36am flash unit worked fine on an alpha a100 - shoe and wireless, and it works wireless with my a200, but i can't get it to work on shoe.

i just found a post stating it is compatible with much later cameras, and it seems unlikely in tech that it would become incompatible, then go back to being compatible, so what am i doing wrong?

been a frustration for ages - any help greatly appreciated.

It should work without a problem, it's the same shoe, no incompatibilities! 

Sony introduced a new shoe for the A99, A77 (and newer), A58 etc... 

I'm guessing poor connection (does it wiggle?).

If it's mounted correctly, it should work.
