WiFi calling Xperia 1

Hi all,

Was hoping to get some help if possible.

I've recently acquired an Xperia 1 (J8110) which I think has O2 software pre-installed. I'm with BT mobile. The phone is currently running on Android 11.

Does anyone know if WiFi calling is a possible feature on this phone? Google searches suggest it is. There is no setting I can find to turn it on unlike my partners Xperia 5 III which has the setting. BT have suggested if the feature is not visible then the phone is not supported for this function. They state it is 'on' from their end which I agree with as WiFi calling works with the same SIM card in other handsets.

Would the feature appear by 'unlocking' or wiping the O2 software? Do you have any other suggestions to try to enable this feature?

Thank you for your time and help.

Regards

Tel

To be honest I doubt that by unlocking the phone will resolve it (though I am not saying it won't) I have an unlocked Xperia and I have to request the wifi calling settings to my provider in order for it to become available as an option on the call settings. So they will send me that in a sort of config message. Otherwise it's not shown by default.

I believe you'd only need to unlock your phone if it doesn't detect your BT mobile sim card. If it works, then it may be an unlocked phone already. Provider apps can appear on the phone automatically as soon as you insert their sim card into the phone, so I wouldn't assume it's locked unless you know it. You can also try inserting another SIM card from another provider like vodafone and confirm whether it's unlocked or not.

Sometimes you need to find someone on the other end of the phone to put some more a$$ into it and actually look harder to help you or speak to someone else.

Most likely it is software related, you might want to flash BT mobile's firmware, perhaps even unlocking the phone from O2

Good news, it's unlocked. O2 stopped sim locking in 2015.

In regards to WiFi and volte calling, you will need to be running the BT firmware for that handset, WiFi calling and volte are controlled (and locked) behind each operators firmware, if no BT firmware exists, it might . Repeat might, work with the UK generic firmware or even EE firmware (ee is BT)

Basically, it will fully depend on what BT policy is regarding volte and WiFi calling features

Hey there, I tried to do some digging and based on this article, it seems that you will first to contact your provided to enable it, then you should be able to use it.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply Corruptedminds and apologies for my delayed response, (had issues accessing my community account).

I tried an EE SIM card and it does work and will also try Vodafone soon.

BT mobile are insisting the WiFi setting is on and the issue lies with the phone. Will try calling them again to request a config message with settings.

Thank you for your suggestions. Will update when I figure this out!

If the same phone works fine with WIFI calling for one of the SIMs and not the other one, I'd start to suspect the SIM not the phone.

Uliwooly. Thank you for your response and apologies for the delay in replying.

I have tried to flash the phone using the Emma/Xperia flashtool but unfortunately it's a tad too technical for me. I took it in to a local phone repair shop to see if they could help. Unfortunately it didn't seem as though the chap knew what I was talking about and said nothing can be done beyond unlocking which I think is already done. Would you have any advice on how to flash the phone?

Thank you

Lord_Virdis. Apologies for the delayed reply and thank you for your suggestion.

Are you able to advise on how I would go about replacing the current firmware with the BT or EE firmware?

Thank you

SkyNet404. Thank you for your reply.

Unfortunately according to BT, the feature is already enabled. I'm planning to call them again to see if they can send the settings as a config message as was suggested earlier.
