There are apps that do the job.
Question: Is it really so important to save all SMS messages?
You can consider to make a screenshot from the very important ones.

Chat apps don't transfer data either unless you save the data from within the app.
For the future: If you use Signal as chat and SMS service it will save your SMS data as well.
