USB switch box with KDL42W654 when using the HDD

Hi, I have a KDL42W654. I leave a small HDD plugged in the USB socket for easy recording, so no spare USB sockets are left.

I have tried plugging in two different USB splitters, 1x powered and 1x passive but nether will allow the HDD to work.

Has anyone tried this and been successful, if so can they recommend which splitter to use so I would have a spare input(s).

The simple answer is that USB splitters/hubs do not work
