Hi All. I have a VGN AR21S laptop which came with Windows XP Media Center Edition preinstalled. I have dual booted it with Vista Ultimate 32 bit and generally have not had many problems getting all drivers to work as it is just a case of coming here or looking at various other vista forums and looking at what other folks have been doing to resolve problems.
BUT my only issue has been the drivers for the network adapters!! My Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection and Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection suffer random Internet dropouts.

Before anyone comments let me explain my set up.

My office is 1 desktop and 2 laptops connected to my modem router which is a dlink DSL 2740b model. The desktop is wired to the modem and my laptop is wired as well. The other laptop is wireless. The desktop is a HP business model and uses a broadcom network adapter and the connection is SOLID it never drops out!! The other sony laptop has a 3945ABG wireless adapter as well and suffers random dropouts as well!!
Its like this - the network icon in the corner and the globe are indicative of my connection being active. Randomly the globe disappears but reappears about 15 seconds later and does this on my machine about 6 times a day! All machines are vista (desktop - business vista, my laptop vista ultimate and the other laptop vista home premium). If I go to the Network and sharing center and watch what is happening its as if the connection craps out for no reason and then reestablishes itself. The lan has all manually assigned ip address's.
DHCP, IPV6 is disabled. BT have checked the line for dropouts and there are none (I actually get around 8megs which is fantastic!!), the router has been checked out and the firmware is stable.
All I can think of is <profanity removed by moderator> drivers.
At the moment I am using microsofts own driver version 8.0.22.0 and have used intels from their site (as on sonys update there is Jack <profanity removed by moderator> for my machine and vista drivers) but they are too pretty crap (random mysterious connect and the reconnects).
What I dont get is how come the HP vista business machine with the broadcom adapter be so stable? It never suffers dropouts and is rock solid.

I have attached an image for all....

(to Matt Wilson)
thanks for the info - I am well aware that are newer drivers available from the Intel Site, my issue is that neither Intel or Sony acknowledge my problem as a known issue. Also the 'Release Notes' do not mention this problem or that they are aware of this issue or that it is a 'Known Issue'. I have had these problems since November 2007 and I am not prepared to be a guinea pig any longer.

My whole purpose of starting this post is to establish if other people are suffering from this scenario and if that they may have solved it.

The last driver I used from the Intel site (11.5.0.0) mysteriously stopped me from visiting https://www.morganstanleycard.co.uk/ !! I uninstalled it and simply went back to the default Microsoft driver and I could once again visit that site!! What on earth is going on??

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!!

I think I know what is causing the problem!! Please see my new post which is self explanatory..

http://forums.microsoft.com/technet/ShowPost.aspx?postid=3496113&isthread=true&siteid=17&authhash=18d3629d3889f5ab3ecb46bc82445e0b522645cf&ticks=633492706530759768

We have a Kyocera Mita KM-2050 KX photocopier/printer (network printer connected to LAN - 3 vista machines)and when the Kyocera goes into sleep mode my network icon indicates LAN access only and drops the internet connection icon (the globe icon disappears).

Why would the sleep option of the network printer cause the globe to disappear?

Please note we can access the internet as normal and the actual internet connection is not lost but the globe disappears to indicate it has!!

I can start any internet browser and the globe icon reappears to indicate internet access once more - or if I leave it alone and view the network icons in the taskbar the icon animation shows activity and sometimes the globe reappears itself - very strange!!

If I commence windows network diagnostics at the point the globe disappears (I know its quite sad staring at the pc waiting for this to happen!!) windows reports back 'Windows did not find any problems with this computers network connection'

We don't have any other issues with the vista machines.

I totally understand the sleep options on the vista machines and the vista machines coming out of sleep or hibernation (as I have seen others have been having) can cause the adapters not to 'wake' or the power options on the network adapters could or may cause this HOWEVER all these options are off.

There are no logs of these events in the event viewer in either system or administrative events.

I have increased the sleep option timeout of the photocopier to the maximum allowed (2 hours) and the incident is less frequent but what I did witness once was when someone powered the photocopier off one night the same thing happened again!! I know someone may say well if increasing the sleep timer and the incident is less frequent then this case is solved but why does this occur in the first place!!?? I haven't seen this type of incident reported anywhere so far.

Ok everyone - rewind a little. The only reason I am doing this is to help others out there that may be suffering from this strange issue. Bottom line the internet globe disappears and reappears for reasons unknown to us. Ok we have moaned about the drivers and network devices but apparently there is a KNOWN reason for this behaviour and sadly it is down to Vista and a NEW service designed to help but actually causes conflicts and this causes the network to get confused and notify its status or what it thinks is the network status!!

I dont give up easily!!

I started a post at technet here...
http://forums.microsoft.com/technet/ShowPost.aspx?postid=3496113&isthread=true&siteid=17&authhash=18d3629d3889f5ab3ecb46bc82445e0b522645cf&ticks=633492706530759768

and from further investigating found this blog which makes VERY VERY interesting reading..
http://securology.blogspot.com/2008/01/windows-vista-phones-home.html

I think this describes the scenario PERFECTLY - please guys (and girls) if you think this is what is causing your problems then please report back - because it does make a huge difference to everyone out there that may be pulling out their hair or think they are actually going mad!!!

Let me know!!
