This might be due to a slow connection from 3 Mobile Broadband - 0.6Mbps download, 0.4Mbps upload, or because I've blocked many items from starting up (by unticking 'Load startup items' in Selective startup in System Configuration). However plenty of things work OK including updates by Norton Internet Security 2008.
