Sorry - forgot about your Optical Out port.

This is a digital sound output by fibre-optic cable. Most modern Home Theatre systems take this SPDIF input and output Dolby Digital or DTS surround sound. Most Audio Amps will also take this input.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SPDIF

Am I right thinking I need a s-video cable, 3.5mm stereo to 2 phono lead and a audio/video scart adapter. S-video doesn't carry audio so the audio comes from the headphone socket...... right?

If this is correct will I get a proper colour picture to watch movies from my hard drive to tv?

thanks

btw *off topic* what is the optical out port for and why is there a red light coming from it?

Unless your TV has HDMI, S-Video or a 15-pin VGA socket then this is the only way.

Just be a little careful - most TV Scart sockets are programmed to receive a RGB signal from a VCR and need reprogramming to accept the S-Video signal (the pictue will be poor quality and B&W unless it is programmed correctly). See if you can re-programme the SCART socket in the TV Setup Menu. If you can't then the scart will only accept a Composite Video signal (Yellow Phono) and you have a problem because newer Vaios do not have the old TV-Out which is Red/White/Yellow.

If you have this problem, you will need a converter box to convert your VGA output to AV Composite Video. Something like this: -

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=223833
