Hi everyone

My Vaio, a VGN FZ18M is advertised by Sony as having a 160GB HDD with a 7.5GB recovery partition.

Device Manager shows 2 partitions on my drive, 1 unnamed at 10,013GB and C: at 142,612MB.

However, Disk Managment shows 2 partitions totalling 149GB, 1 is 9.78GB big (and marked as healthy, 100% free and EISA configuration), the other 139.27GB (NTFS, healthy, system, boot, pagefile, active crash dump and primary partition)

Can anyone please explain what is going on? Which set of figures is correct? and how come I've lost 10GB according to Vista?

Many thanks in advance

Hi littlebucko

Many thanks for your answer which makes perfect sense. Can you please give me a little more information on this 'vista' partition? What does it contain? How is it sized? Am I able to cleanup unneeded files from it to minimise it's size or is it best left alone?

Thanks again - your help is very much appreciated

burwil

Hi burwil and welcome to Club Vaio.

Your hard disc has 160,000,000,000 bytes capacity.

Your computer's operating system cannot count properly, Windows counts in Binary (everything to the base of 2)

Because Windows uses the binary system, the nearest it can get to 1,000 bytes (a kilobyte) is 1,024 bytes - calculated as two to the power ten (2^10=1024). So it uses 1024 bytes of your storage to count a kilobyte. Similarly, it counts 1,024 KB as 1MB and 1,024MB to get 1GB.

This means your operating system is counting 1,073,741,824 bytes (2^30=1073741824) of your storage as 1 GB. This means Windows measures your 160GB drive as only 149GB.

As I said - Windows cannot count properly.

:smileyd_oh:
