My DW-U14A DVD+-RW on PCV RS406 dosen't burn DVDs anymore

Hello,

I've got a big problem with this writer, it stopped writing to writable DVDs...

I tried several different burning software, like Nero and Alchohol 120% but wouldn't work on both.

I also tried changing the type and brand of the writable dvd disc but with no success.

This is what happens, It starts up and starts to burn, but when it starts writing the LEAD-IN it stops, and says LEAD-In failed and aborts, at the very start, hardly 2% of writing done.

Can someone tell me what i need to do to fix this problem?

Not something that might affect the burner tho (would it?):

- Few games
- Yahoo Messenger
- Cyberlink PowerDVD

Would these affect it in any way?

My mate as the same probs.
I dont no where the prob is and its the same computer PCV RS406.

Did that, tried burning something, still gave me the same problem...

Is there anyway of re-installing the writer, reinstalling the driver? or firmware?

Yeah

Right click My Computer
Click on Properties
Click on Hardware tab
Click on Device Manager
Click on optiocal drives
Right click the one in question
Click on Uninstall
Restart the VAIO

It will reinstall itself automatically after the restart.

This sounds awfully familiar ...

I know that it is a little drastic, but take off all your data and place the PC back into its "out of the box" state and see if the DVD burning stuff works again. If it does, simply add the relevant bits of software update until it falls over.

I know it is teaching to suck eggs, but I have spent weeks with W1s and others that seem to be having very similar problems. Sony is taking my W1 away for a further look, and I hope to be more the wiser shortly, but there seem to be a lot of people with very similar problems.

doing that sounds really REALLY drastic... Not sure if I want to take that step unless I know it will be fixed after doing this.

One other thing, is it true that sony doesn't provide support and updated firmware for OEM writers?

Everyones DVD drives seem to be failing recently. Makes me kinda glad I payed throught the nose for coverplan at curry's. I advise everyone to get insurance, and when they encounter problems like this they can send it away, adn coverplan promise to have your laptop back within 5 working days.

Also, my local currys have borrowed me an mp3 player until my VP is fixed. I don't think thats part of the coverplan, but its a nice touch that you may only get from smaller local stored.

The problem is CoverPlan is really just using VAIO-Link when dealing with Sony.

Whats the point in getting a retail 'SONY' version though, you could buy something like, I dunno, err.. pioneer's oem drive, and you still get support and firmware updates.. (i think)

Sadly people DVD+RW dont seem to work in mine now!

I dont understand, why it dosnt read the disc.

Every time i insert a DVD+RW it frezzs the computer (PCV - RS502) for some reason. it never use to do that:smileycry:
