Hi,

My PCG-F403 Vaio notebook has a 3.5mm socket labelled "TV-out". What kind of cable do I need for this to work?

You need the same type of cable as is used for most video cameras. It has a multi-pole jack on one end and three phono (RCA) plugs on the other.

cool. there appears to be 2 types of camcorder lead though.

One is connected up as follows:

tip = left audio (white)
1st ring = video (yellow)
2nd ring = ground
sleeve = right audio (red)

whereas the other one is the opposite way round:

tip = right audio (red)
1st ring = ground
2nd ring = video (yellow)
sleeve = left audio (white)

Any idea which one I need?

Sorry it's taken so long to reply, I couldn't find a multimeter. The lead I'm using is tip - left audio.

Ok, so I bought the video camera lead and got the video working to my tv, but no sound.

I can get sound by connecting the headphones socket to the phono>scart converter I'm using, but surely I should be able to get sound straight from the video camera lead?

Sorry, I should also point out, that while watching videos on my tv, I *do* get sound from the laptop's internal speakers, but not through the 3-phono cable.

The F403 is different to more modern models insomuch as the TV out only carries the video signal. You therefore need a 3.5mm jack to a single yellow phono to connect from the TV out to the video input of the TV, plus a jack to two phono connected from the headphone socket to the TV audio in.

Yet you still need a 4-pole jack-->3 phono cable? That's just weird!

So they actually make you get a cable with phono sockets for the audio channels, yet don't send the audio channels along it?!

No you don’t need a four pole jack to three phono, although as you already have one you may as well use it. All you really need is a three pole jack to single phono for the video, plus the separate audio cable.

This is different with more recent Vaios – the F403 is getting on a bit!

Yeah I know - it's my aunt's old one!

I'm just surprised because I tried using an audio cable for the video cable originally, using just one of the phonos as the video out, and it didn't work. Oh well, doesn't really matter!
