Vgn-a397xp fan sounds..

Hi, I bought a new Sony vaio 2 days ago... now the problem..
The cpu fan starts to cool...stops then starts again over and over...when the electric cord is plugged in..on the battery when I dont have the laptop plugged...It works perfect...

Does anyone have any clues about this prob..

Eddie,

This is because when it's plugged into the mains it's using full CPU power, and when it's on batteries it's using adaptive mode, which means it's using less CPU cycles or power

The thing Is that I returned my first vaio a week ago ..It had sound problems and they changed It for this 1.

I dont think I had the same problem with the fan on the outher 1,
I start up windows then the fan sounds..It stops for 3 sec and then starts to go on full blow...and this remains as long as Its plugged In....

Can something be wrong on my vaio or Is this normal...Im getting worried because I dont want a damaged comp...

And as I said when on batterys- the fan doesnt sound anything.

You could try going to the power properties and changing to adaptive

Have tried that and put fan to level 1 quit...still sounds and then the soun d goes off. But when I change to that mode all programs lagg- cant hardy have a program open.

Can It be a hardware issue. If It was a hardware Issue I think It would sound with my battery on to wich It doesnt do...

Maybe you should get some compressed air and squirt a bit on the fan to get rid of excess dust

Hi, I recently brought a 497xp and the same thing is occuring on my fan. I agree with you that it just doesn't sound right.
It just starts and stops consistently. I expected it to be only every couple of minutes really. It not loud but it just doesn't seem right

Yeah...makes me wondering If something Is wrong. But If u have the same problem maybe It shall be like this...would be nice If some people with experiance with this problem could post....a message.

i'm with you guys

i get this same phenomenon on my new a417m,think its normal behaviour,wish it stayed on ALL the time rather than bring attention to itself by doing the on off trick.:smileyconfused:

a workaround i found is to install speedswitchxp

look under tools

if you choose the max Battery option,guess what?no fan(or very seldom) this does of course sacrifice a fair chunk of cpu though

Sony,please enable something in the Bios or suggest a Util that gives us control over the fan,ideally having always on but quieter option...:smileylove: please

I downloaded mobilemeter to see the cpu temp...

between 59-and 65 Is this normal.

Its a new comp..why should I preinstall it. I dont think that will help. Im getting used to the sound, but I dont wanna a damaged comp thats all.

Everything works ok do, only the sound when the cord Is plugged In and the cpu temp. Is around 59-64.
