STR-DN1040 audio inputs - output to HDMI

We've just bought an STR-DN1040 AV amp, and are generally pleased with it.

There is just one problem (apart from the lack of bluetooth, which was a bit of a disappointment). We're using the second HDMI output to feed to other rooms. This works fine for sources where the audio is going in to the amp via HDMI. It doesn't work for anything else; we get the picture fine, but no sound coming out on HDMI (on either output). This applies to analogue in, Optical in, and even to Internet radio from the amp itself.

I can't find anything in the manual that says this won't work; is this really by design, or is our amp broken? Or is there some hidden setting I need to set?
