A number of apps (phone, Instagram, play store) now launch in dark mode and I can't work out how to stop this.

Hi @Andy1874, sorry for the late reply.

Xperia phones on Android 9 don't support Dark mode on system level, but some 3rd party apps have implemented Dark mode in certain apps. If you want to turn Dark mode on or off in a specific app, please check the Settings section in the app. Depending on how the app developer has implemented the feature, it might not always be possible to manually turn Dark mode on or off. For more information and detailed support, please contact the app developer.

To contact an app developer

Find and tap Play Store.
Search for the app by name.
Find and tap the app from your search results.
Scroll down and tap Developer contact to find the contact details.

I've sorted the issue. The problem was caused by android auto, once I'd updated that app the apps that had defaulted to dark mode returned to their original state
