HDR Dim and Washed Out on AF8

Hi,

When watching content from any external input, (PS5, Apple TV 4K), HDR content is washed out and not as bright as when I am watching on the TV's internal apps.

I have tried several solutions; factory reset, new HDMI cable, adjusting settings on the external devices, but nothing can match the picture on the internal apps.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

I'd say make sure that the HDMI format is enhanced, you can check this:

Unfortunately I already have this set to enhanced and I have the HDMI cable plugged into HDMI3 which supports this.

Hmmmm,

I can see that you did a lot, but just to confirm, did you try a software update? Or, are you sure that your TV is running the latest version?

I tried a firmware update with a USB but the latest version had already been installed , I tried a factory reset recently too and then set the HDMI format to enhanced again, but that didn't solve the problem either 😕

I have the same issue with HDR looking washed out on streaming services, and see it on my LG GX and my Samsung JS9000, via a Roku Streaming Stick. Both of which benefit from 350Mbps FTTP internet, so the problem isn’t at my end.

Sony have explained that in order for HDR to work, the TVs have to hold back a little; the analogy I use is that if you have a car that can cruise all day at 70 (SDR) but you want to be able to push it to 80 from time to time (HDR), then you have to accept that you can only cruise at 60 the rest of the time,

But I doubt this is it. My benchmark for HDR is Planet Earth II on a UHD player, which doesn’t wash out in the slightest, so I think it’s a bandwidth thing, and the streaming services haven’t got it right yet.

Maybe try to see if the ''Motion flow'' should help with that?

But honestly, it might not affect the external devices that much.

Hi,

I've played around a fair bit with motionflow settings but sadly this doesn't fix it either.

Here's some photos for you to see the problem both on Disney+ using the exact same settings. (Same camera exposure too) - in a photo the difference is less noticeable than in person.

Hey astrotom, I don't see any difference to be honest, but, what I do know that the settings differ from an input to another, try playing with the brightness while connecting the external device.
